Recently, a patient who has been living with a transplanted kidney for 10 years was discharged from the Center for Hepatology, Gastroenterology and Organ Transplantation from the National Scientific Research Center.

Ayaru (the heroine's name was changed at her request) underwent another course of immunosuppressive therapy at the National Scientific Research Center, which she receives periodically after transplantation for preventive purposes. She was one of the first patients to whom, while still in the city of Astana, a kidney was transplanted.
Ayaru was only 15 years old when she was diagnosed with glomerulonephritis (damage to the glomeruli of the kidneys). Gradually, the disease led to chronic renal failure. By the age of 17, she had already failed both kidneys, and dialysis became one of the daily rituals, which took 7 years.
“Hemodialysis is a procedure for cleansing the body of toxins (metabolic products) using a special apparatus that replaces the kidneys (in a healthy body, this function is performed by the kidneys), which is performed for patients with renal failure 2-3 times a week. This is a very tedious procedure, and besides, it does not give the same effect as the natural human urinary system. Without hemodialysis, metabolic products are not excreted from the body, which leads to intoxication. "
Therefore, transplantation was the only option for saving the girl.
“I have been on dialysis for about 7 years. Trying to use all the opportunities she moved to Astana. Hoping that they will help me here and I will receive a quota for treatment. At that time, transplantation was just beginning to develop in Kazakhstan. Cadaveric donation was not developed. The operations were carried out rarely and only in Almaty. But there was a very long queue. Of the possible options, I had only two: to wait for a long queue in Almaty, or to apply for a fee to a foreign clinic. And then one day, by a lucky chance, I met the nephrologists Narmanova Oryngul Zhaksybaevna and Abisheva Zhanar Attarovna. From them I learned that the Ministry of Health is promoting a project for the development of transplantation in the country and for this purpose invites foreign transplantologists to conduct a master class for our specialists. Within the framework of the project, it was planned to carry out a transplant operation in this center, in Astana, then it had a different name. Since the operation required a patient, I was offered to take part in this project, but for this it was necessary to find a suitable donor. This is how I got the hope that I would undergo a transplant. My only brother became a donor. He was 24 and I was 23, ”says Ayaru.
The kidney transplant operation was performed by Professor Park Kwang Tae from South Korea and transplant doctor Gani Kutymuratov here at the National Scientific Research Center (then the clinic was called the Republican Scientific Center for Emergency Medicine). Before the operation, the patient and the donor were examined for compatibility and health status, and already in November 2010 the first transplant was performed.
From that moment on, the development of the transplant service began. In 2010, a special group was created to provide high-tech medical care to patients in need of organ transplantation. And today a specialized department is represented at the NSC - the Center for Organ Transplantation, which provides high-tech medical care at the republican level. The NSC has accumulated advanced experience in the field of organ transplantation. Over the entire period of its existence, the department has carried out more than 500 organ transplants (liver and kidneys).
“Any organ transplant is technically complex and requires a great deal of professionalism. The difficulty lies not only in the operation, but also in the postoperative administration of patients. None of the immunosuppressive therapy regimens available in the world does not guarantee postoperative rejection of the transplanted organ, however, it has high patient survival rates. The 5-year survival rate is estimated by international standards. However, our patient has been living with a transplanted organ for more than 10 years, which is of course very pleasing, ”says transplant doctor Mels Asykbaev.
For more than 10 years the woman has been observed, the transplant is working perfectly, she is still receiving only minimal immunosuppressive therapy. Ayaru is now married, lives an ordinary life, she has big plans for the future and she is very grateful to her doctors.
